Murchison Productions is over 18 years old, incorporated in Launceston in 1987. The company’s clients include The Commonwealth Government, Rural Press Ltd (headquartered in Sydney), The Examiner Newspaper, Motor Accidents Insurance Board, AMC Search Ltd, Moorilla Estate, Agfest, Clifford Craig Medical Research, Tasmanian General Practice Divisions Ltd (TGPD supports doctors), Launceston City Council, TCCI and many other small and large businesses.
Through its 18 years the company has created products for traditional media and the internet which have received international awards (from New York and elsewhere). It has provided solutions for many industry sectors, from real estate to motor vehicles, health to tourism. One key advantage the company offers is a small focussed team with a mix of technical and creative expertise. It is a leader in open source web & database development, and experienced with secure payment systems.
The company received international recognition in 2004 for creating one of the best newspaper web sites in the Asia Pacific. The Examiner won the award for its website, beating some of Australia's biggest newspapers, including The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. The Examiner's Web site won the Norske Skog newspaper marketing award.
The award was presented at the 2004 annual PANPA conference. PANPA, the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association is an industry association representing newspapers in the Asia-Pacific region. It has a membership comprising 185 newspaper publishing companies in 18 countries.
The Examiner was the first pay-per-view online newspaper in Australia. It was also the first to use international XML definitions for all newspaper story categories (domestic and international). It was the first to publish all editorial stories - from the hardcopy edition - online, even before the hardcopy edition was publicly available. It was the first newspaper to work with the Cybergraphics legacy system. It was an innovation leader before the Murdoch, Packer and Fairfax Press. The Examiner online (and its 'back-end' databases and systems) was totally created by Murchison Productions with a budget less than one hundredth (100th) the cost of The Australian Newspaper's online presence (for the Murdoch Press). The project director was David Male.
